World Language Week at Southington High School was a resounding success. Preparation began the week before with World Language students painting the cafeteria windows with colorful scenes representing the five languages studied. The first day of World Language week began with a daily trivia contest. A question pertaining to one of the languages that we offer, French, Italian, German, Latin, and Spanish, was asked during our morning announcements. A ballot box was placed in the cafeteria and the students wrote their answers during the lunch waves. A winner was chosen each day and prizes were awarded. We also had the students make posters and sayings that promoted World Languages and these were posted on the walls in our area. Each teacher celebrated World Language week in his/her own individual way. The French classes made crepes and filled them with ice cream, pie filling, and Nutella. Authentic foods were tasted in the Spanish classes. Many of the teachers had their students make t-shirts promoting their language and they were required to wear them all day. One student had a picture of his Latin teacher printed on his t-shirt. Now that’s quite a compliment! Sounds of French, Spanish, and German music could be heard coming from the classrooms. The week also included a fundraiser where teachers and students alike worked to sell candy in order to be able to offer a language award to deserving seniors. The World Language Department at Southington High is a committed and enthusiastic group of dedicated teachers who work hard to bring world language alive to our students.
