Presented by PIER of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies and the Yale Council on European Studies with support from a U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.

Vladimir Golstein, Associate Professor of Slavic Studies at Brown University, will present this workshop on Yevgeny Yamyatinis' We, one of the greatest and most influential Russian novels of the 20th century, having inspired both 1984 and Brave New World.  Designed to be of interest and use to teachers of history, social studies, language, or literature, this workshop will examine Zamyatin's masterpiece in both its historical and literary context.  This workshop will begin with  a presentation by Vladimir Golstein, followed by dinner, followed by an intensive discussion of the book and Professor Golstein's presentation on it. 11/6/04 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Yale Center of International and Area Studies, New Haven, CT Teaching About the Arab World and Islam This full-day workshop will examine in detail cultural geography, history, family and women in Islam in addition to recommending books and materials that are especially helpful when teaching about the modern period.  Special attention will be paid to techniques on how to effectively communicate the new knowledge.  Attendees will participate in hands-on activities and practice quizzes they can take directly back to their students.  During the workshop, participants will discuss A Medieval Banquet in the Alhambra Palace, a cross-curriculum activity in which students take on the roles of notable figures in medieval life gathered for a banquet in 15th century Spain. This workshop will be led by Audrey Shabbas of the Middle East Policy Council. Mardi Gras Carnaval Students at Saint Joseph will celebrate FAT TUESDAY with Italian, French, and Hispanic food & music.  Entrance is gained by the student body through the purchase of Mardi Gras beads, which students are expected to wear in order to attend the events.   A dance instructor will teach Salsa, Merengue and Tarantella.  Students will prepare all the food for the festivities.  Other events include mask making and instruction on the making of crepe and cappuccino. 2005 The Week of Languages
Mayor Richetelli has declared 2005 the Year of Languages in Milford and Foran High School will celebrate all week.  The school will be decorated (bulletin boards, glass cases, signs) and each day will be dedicated to a specific language.  Each day will begin with a greeting, a trivia question, the school lunch menu and one new word in that target language.  The food services will coordinate and label all meals in Latin, Italian, French, and Spanish.  Music pertaining to that day's language will be played between classes.
